We have been excited about the birth of our 6th grandbaby, my baby's 2nd child, Kohen. Megan and Nathan had their baby shower on Saturday the 27th of February. The shower was awesome with the baby not expected for another 4 weeks. Fate, however, has a way of changing the expected. Late that night Megan started bleeding and headed for the hospital. Learning of this 3:30am that morning, which was now the 28th, we were quite concerned with this being 4 weeks early. Later that morning we learned that Megan was being given medication to get the birthing process started.
In the mean time mom was not progressing very well but was still in good spirits.
Later in the late afternoon the doctor decided to give it another hour or so but was going to have to perform a C section soon if things did not start progressing better.
Especially since Aunt Hannah (nay nay) decided to give him a sucker, which of course he drewelled all over the place.
With all of the extra care that the doctors and nurses were giving Kohen it didn't take long to realize that there was some problems. As soon as the doctor was able to he came out and told us that it turned out that Megan experienced a partial abruption with the plecenta which was causeing the bleeding and did not allow for Kohen's lungs to develop like they should have and that he was not getting the proper amount of oxygen in his body. They quickly determined that they needed to transport him to the Tulsa St John Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
They truly did an amazing job and we were very thankful in every way for their professionalism and qualty of care.
By this time Mom was out of surgery and doing very well. She is such a strong person, she reminds me of her grandmother Vindy Smith.
Before they left with Kohen they took him into mom's room so that she could see him for the first time. This was obviously hard for Mom to have to say goodnight to her new baby not knowing when she would be able to see him again.
The doctor was very good to explain to everyone what was going on and what to expect. They told us that his little lungs did not get the required sirfactant that helps his lungs expand and the little air pockets to be able to expand. At that point it was expected that Kohen would be in the NICU for at least 2 weeks.
I was able to get one more picture of Kohen on his way out.
At this point the last prayers for the night were being said, dad is heading for the NICU to be with Kohen, Melissa was staying with Megan, and me and Betty were taking Skylar home for the night.
As I can I will be posting more about Kohen and his stay in the NICU.
However, this post is on March 13,2010 and all of the above post was concerned with the events of February 28th, 2010. Thus, I would be amiss to not let you know that Kohen is at home with mom, dad, and brother and is doing very well. Our Little Miracle Grandson --

We praise God that Megan is in good shape and that we KNOW that Kohen is in his hands.
